VITAMIN D’S NEWLY DISCOVERED FUNCTIONS

Do you think about vitamin D when you’re catching up on the sun’s rays outside? New, exciting research shows that this little powerhouse vitamin has many newly discovered functions. Of course, maintaining healthy vitamin D levels is essential throughout all stages of your life. But did you know that vitamin D receptors are found in countless tissues throughout the entire body? That can only mean that vitamin D has a much greater impact on the body’s health than we previously thought.

IMMUNE CELLS HAVE VITAMIN D RECEPTORS?

We already knew that vitamin D was very important in helping to maintain healthy bones, bone growth, bone mineralization and absorption of calcium. Vitamin D also supports cardiovascular system health. But now, eye-opening research shows that our immune cells have vitamin D receptors. What? Immune cells with vitamin D receptors? Yes! This means that getting enough vitamin D may be critically important to support our immune system health by helping to activate immune cells.

THE SUNSHINE VITAMIN

The body’s need for adequate vitamin D has gathered even more attention lately. Although direct sunlight exposure on the skin initiates an excellent source of vitamin D, many people simply can’t achieve the vitamin D levels they need for their best health. Maybe they simply don’t receive enough sunlight or it’s tough for them to convert vitamin D to the active form. Either way, taking a high quality vitamin D supplement makes good sense for supporting optimal health.

WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR IN A VITAMIN D SUPPLEMENT?

First, the preferred form of vitamin D is D3 (not vitamin D2) because it is better metabolized by the body. Second, look for a natural source of vitamin D3 (not synthetic) with at least 5,000 IU per dose. Avoid products with undesirable chemical tagalongs such as magnesium stearate (a questionable excipient) or other chemical no-no’s.

Key Benefits of Live-Source Vitamin D3

Immunity: Population groups with greater direct sunlight exposure or more vitamin D3 exposure, were found to have stronger immune function than those with restricted sunlight exposure.* Vitamin D3 receptors are known to exist on most immune cells and play a role in maintaining healthy immune cell maturity, differentiation and integration.

Breast and Mucosal Organs: Research indicates optimal serum levels of vitamin D3 may be important in maintaining the best health of the cells of the breasts, lungs, colon, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, bladder, prostate, uterus, ovaries and kidneys.

Bone Health: In a 3-year randomized controlled study, vitamin D3 and calcium supplementation promoted bone strength and reduced risk of falling in women aged 65 or older. Vitamin D3 supplements were shown to support hip and non-vertabral bone health in a meta-analysis of twelve double-blind randomized controlled trials of 20,000 people. Vitamin D is essential for healthy calcium metabolism; it promotes intestinal calcium and phosphorus uptake and can reduce urinary calcium excretion.

Nerve Function: Research indicates vitamin D may promote neural health by supporting healthy nerve conduction potential, antioxidant defense and neuronal calcium regulation. High circulating blood levels of end-chain vitamin D3, 25- hydroxyvitamin D, were associated with nerve and myelin health in a study of 7 million U.S. military personnel, published in JANA, 2006.

Cognition: Higher levels of vitamin D were correlated with healthy mood and mental function in two studies of more than 300 elderly people. Additionally, we now know that vitamin D receptors and vitamin D hydroxylation pathways exist in areas of the brain responsible for memory and cognition.

Heart Health: Healthy blood vessel relaxation and blood flow are associated with ideal levels of vitamin D3. Healthy inflammatory response, antioxidant defense and cytokine production are associated with optimal blood levels of vitamin D as well.

Years ago a Blood test showed my D levels at 18. Dr recommended a brand that I tried, with very little change. Researched on line and took a chance on research labs. It’s easy to take, took a little more than the recommended amount. my D levels shot up so high the dr told me to cut back on the amount I was taking. Never go without it now and my D levels have been spot on all year round, ever since. Won’t be without it!!

  • Great stuff
