A. Magnesium chloride is an extremely difficult ingredient to formulate with, and in fact took us over 14 months to develop what we have now. We attempted dozens of various formulas that excluded the ingredients you are asking about, but without success. The nature of magnesium chloride is such that it "breaks" most lotion formulas, turning them into a watery composition where the oil and water components separate within days if not hours. Despite these challenges, we still held true to our core values and selected ingredients that are completely safe, and certified organic where possible. I've taken the time of linking to the Environmental Working Group's database of cosmetic ingredients, where they rank them from 1-10 based on safety. All of the ingredients in our lotion rank 1 or lower on the EWG rating scale - Glyceryl Stearate, hydroxypropyl starch phosphate, caprlyl glycol. But to answer your question more precisely, glyceryl stearate is used as an emulsifier, the caprylyl glycol has antimicrobial properties, and hydroxypropyl starch is a viscosity builder.
