Enjoy Safe Beauty with a DIY Hand Lotion Recipe

by Kayla Grossmann

Safer beauty is a huge topic of conversation these days and we’re finding more and more clean products hit the shelves to support great skin health. While we’re huge advocates of safe beauty and safe beauty practices, we’re still no stranger to experimenting with our own homemade remedies to create the most perfect lotions and potions to support our skin’s radiant glow.

The skin is the largest organ on the body, so nourishing it with organic, non-toxic topical lotions, makeup and sunscreen is more essential than ever. With extended sun exposure after a summertime spent in the great outdoors we love lathering up with our homemade lotions just before bed.

For background, most drugstore-bought lotions have an unknown laundry-list of ingredients that can include compounds meant to slowly dry out the skin, defeating the whole purpose of lotioning up in the first place. Don’t let the consistency of most lotions fool you, they provide a temporary relief, but ultimately dehydrate the skin. In fact, most chapsticks and lipsticks will do just the same.

We have our own recipes to combat that! We’ve been testing with many key ingredients like coconut oil, to the less obvious like avocado and egg yolks, to create the most optimal mixtures for your personal skincare needs. For dry or aging skin we recommend a combination of rose and geranium essential oils. For soothing irritated skin, lavender oil is wonderful and the fresh-smelling scent is divine. If you’re skin happens to be on the more oily side, then using an lemongrass with help prevent excess oil production.

A few tips and tricks to keep in mind when crafting a lotion of your own are that natural ingredients perish at a rapid rate--aka you must use your creation within days of mixing. If you’re not using any broad spectrum preservative, then definitely use within three days. We also love aloe vera, but do keep in mind this will change the consistency and allow for the lotion to thicken, but if no preservative it will last longer when in the refrigerator. If you’re finding that the mixture is more liquidy than you’re used to, feel free to put in a pump bottle instead of the suggested mason jar.

For optimal application, we recommend putting all over your body right after getting out of the shower or right before bed. Here your pores are able to really absorb this goodness and give your skin the food it need to continue to shine and thrive.
