An Authentic Cod Liver Oil!
True to ancient roots, Green Pasture Fermented Cod Liver Oil is produced using traditional no-heat methods. In contrast to the harsh refinement processes used by many other fish oil manufacturers, this fermented cod liver oil is gently small-batch handled through a proprietary fermentation technique. This delicate process naturally maximizes nutrient bioavailability and reduces any contaminants in the food. The result is an extremely pure and nutritious high-vitamin cod liver oil that rivals those of past generations.
This oil is a rich source of vitamins A and D, both of which are not easily obtained at optimal levels with our modern diets and lifestyles. Additionally, Green Pasture’s Fermented Cod Liver Oil offers a hearty supply of the essential fatty acids EPA and DHA, otherwise known as the "Omega 3s." This oil is thick and rich, full of synergistic, naturally occurring nutrients. No synthetic compounds of any kind are added.
According to the research of Dr. Weston A. Price, cod liver oil and butter oil, when taken together, provide complementary factors leading to proper essential fatty acid balance. Concentrated butter oil contains arachidonic acid (AA), an omega-6 fatty acid, while cod liver oil is rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), an omega-3. Moreover, the saturated fatty acids in the butter oil promote efficient utilization of the unsaturated fatty acids in the fermented cod liver oil. Finally, butter oil contains a broad and deep range of important quinones including vitamins K, E, and CoQ enzymes while cod liver oil is rich in vitamins A and D. According to a recent independent analysis carried out by the Weston A. Price Foundation, the estimates for fermented cod liver oil are Vitamin D around 22 IU/capsule (219 IU/tsp) and vitamin A around 140 IU/capsule (1400 IU/tsp). Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Does your cod liver oil have all natural vitamins A, D and E? Are there any synthetic vitamins?
A.The vitamins in our cod liver oil are all naturally occurring. It is uncommon in the industry but our sources are one of the few remaining that maintain these natural standards. There are no synthetic vitamins added.
Q. How much fermented cod liver oil should I take?
A. Because fermented cod liver oil is overall more like a food than a supplement, people take a wide range of doses based on personal preference and need. Please see our post on Fermented Cod Liver Oil: How much should I take? for a more detailed explanation.
Q. Can I get too much vitamin D?
A. If you take cod liver oil in recommended amounts and eat a normal diet and have no liver problems, you shouldn't get too much vitamin D.
Q. Should I stop taking cod liver oil in the summer?
A. You can consider cutting down on cod liver oil during the summer months if you get out in the sun with few clothes on and no sunscreen during the middle of the day on a daily basis for 20 minutes or more. In other times of year in the US, the UV-B rays are diminished so vitamin D production happens much less robustly.
Q. Will I like the taste of cod liver oil?
A. Some of our customers tolerate our unflavored cod liver oil right from the spoon. It does have a very strong taste however, and others prefer the flavors we offer or they will mix cod liver oil with a small amount of water, milk, or juice. Alternatively, we offer cod liver oil in capsules. Please note that we are unable to accept returns on opened bottles.
Q. How does one dispense a 2 ml dose of the fermented cod liver oil?
A. Each bottle of fermented cod liver oil liquid comes with a calibrated syringe that fits into the bottle's plastic top. You are able to firmly insert the syringe into the top, invert the bottle and draw the desired dose into the syringe. Cod liver oil gels can be taken simply with a teaspoon.
Q. Is your fermented cod liver oil heated during processing? Are any solvents used?
A. No, fermented cod liver oil is not heated. It is goes though a non-heated lacto-fermentation process.
Q. Is it pure?
A. Yes, it contains only cod liver oil. Natural flavors and a small amounts of natural antioxidant are added to some of the oils.
Q. Is it "high vitamin cod liver oil?"
A. Yes. This oil comes from a certain species of cod fished during the seasons when the nutrients are at optimal density resulting in a nutrient content that is 2-5x greater density than other brands while maintaining the recommended ratio of Vitamin A to D.
Q. How should the fermented cod liver oil be stored? What is its shelf life?
A. Fermented cod liver oil is best stored in the refrigerator or a cool dark place after opening. The oil may cloud or solidify if refrigerated for extended periods of time. This does not harm the product, but will change the texture. Both sealed and opened cod liver oil will remain stable for up to 2 years if properly stored.
Q. Can I take fermented cod liver oil if I have a seafood allergy?
A. If you or a family member suspects a food allergy, please consult your physician before using any and all fish oil/cod liver oil products. There are discussions indicating that those with shellfish allergies should avoid cod liver oil and any other product derived from the sea.
Q. Is the cod liver oil tested for heavy metals, toxins and radiation?
A. Every lot is tested for PCB's, metals etc... And every small run is tested three times for pathogens (standard food screens). Biofeedback methods are used to screen for radiation. All testing is done by third party labs and per FDA regulations for food safety. The testing is beyond what you will typically find within the food industry.

Made Cramps go Away
I have been taking this for about a 2-3 weeks and I must say I think its pretty amazing. I was skeptical as I am with all vitamin products, but I am keeping this in my routine for sure. I have awful cramps 3 weeks out of the month and after taking this for a couple weeks, it has stopped!

Cinnamon Tingle Cod Liver oil
Like a couple other reviewers I would also recommend the Cinnamon flavor cod liver oil. I remember my mother trying to get me to take a mint flavored CLO as a child- YUCK! The Cinnamon Tingle is, in one word, AWESOME. I am VERY impressed and happy with it. My first time trying and buying, without a doubt I will be recommending it to all of my friends and family!

Thank you for making such a superb product!
I just want to say this stuff is great! I am so glad there is still a company offering natural fermented cod liver oil. I love the cinnamon flavor; it makes it so much easier to take. My only criticism is the orange flavor is awful! It does not have much of an orange flavor and is bitter without covering the fishy taste. We thought we would try something new and we can hardly choke it down! We will be sticking with the great cinnamon flavor from now on!Thanks!
